After seven years away, Charlotte, a successful international concert pianist, returns to her homeland to reunite with her daughter Eva, who has become a small-town pastor's wife. The relationship between the two women is complicated - Charlotte chose a career as a pianist over the responsibilities of motherhood. The visit reopens the wounds of the past, the reunion is overshadowed by reproaches and self-righteousness, the need for mutual closeness makes mother and daughter alternately seek and repel each other.
Autumn Sonata was first made into a film in 1978; The partial prototype of Charlotte's character was Ingmar Bergman's ex-wife, Swedish pianist Käbi Laretei of Estonian origin. Later, the work has also been played a lot on theater stages.
