Viva Verdi: Balletto di Milano dedicates its performances in Estonia to the memory of Maestro Eri Klas
In early November, the Milan-based ballet company Balletto di Milano will arrive in Estonia with its new production, “Viva Verdi”. The production is dedicated to the memory of Maestro Eri Klas. The music of Giuseppe Verdi held a special place throughout the distinguished conductor’s career. In Verdi’s operas, Klas found a rare balance in which drama and music formed an inseparable whole. The performances in Tallinn and Jõhvi are part of Balletto di Milano’s tour of the Baltic States and Finland.
Ballabili – when opera begins to dance
Giuseppe Verdi did not compose ballets as standalone works. His operas, however, contain ballabili – dance scenes that formed an integral part of the operatic drama. They play a particularly important role in works that Verdi wrote for the Paris Opera or adapted for French audiences, as the grand opéra tradition required the inclusion of a ballet scene.
It was these scenes that inspired the idea for “Viva Verdi”. The production brings dance, which was already woven into Verdi’s music, back into the spotlight, now interpreted through the language of contemporary dance. At the same time, it retains its classical foundations – the dancers’ lightness and elegance, precise movement and outstanding technical skill.
Combining classical, neoclassical and contemporary dance, “Viva Verdi” offers a fresh perspective on Verdi’s work while preserving its emotional power and beauty. “I love everything in art that is beautiful,” the composer once said.
