This is a story about two women — a mother and a daughter — whose life together is a never-ending battle. Even the simplest everyday action can escalate into a major quarrel, and hurting each other becomes a sort of addictive shot of adrenaline that reminds you you’re still alive. When Maureen’s path crosses with Pato’s, old Mag feels a rising fear of being left alone, and in the struggle for love all means become acceptable.
Irish playwright Martin McDonagh is rightfully considered a modern classic of contemporary drama. His breakthrough came with the play “The Beauty Queen of Leenane”, followed by “The Pillowman”, “The Lieutenant of Inishmore” and others, as well as several acclaimed films, including “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”.
In 1999, Ain Mäeots staged this play in Estonia for the first time. The women’s roles were then performed by Liina Tennosaar and Herta Elviste. Now the director returns to this story, giving Liina Tennosaar the opportunity to play the role once performed by Elviste.
