The Mäetaguse Manor belonged to the von Rosen family for over 200 years and plays an important role in Estonian history.
It is known that nearly all male descendants of the von Rosens were deeply involved in the military – but they also had wives, and their life stories were just as colorful.

A female bullfighter who was a spy. A criminal nun. A baroness who outwitted the Devil himself. What do they all have in common? These are real women from the von Rosen family, which has been connected to Estonia for 800 years. Their intriguing destinies have inspired a mystical play where facts blend with fantasy.

This summer, Mart Sander directs his mysterious drama "The Rose Key" at the Mäetaguse Manor in Ida-Viru County – a manor that once belonged to the von Rosen family. The play explores the eerie legends and even true stories surrounding the women of this noble family. On stage: Triin Lellep and Mart Sander.

The von Rosen noble family arrived in the Estonian territories in the 13th century, first mentioned in 1241 as vassals of the Danish king. Over the centuries, the family became one of Estonia’s most prominent noble houses, owning as many as 19 manor estates at its peak. Today, one of the most beautiful of these is undoubtedly Mäetaguse Manor, where this summer's events unfold – stories so incredible they seem fictional, yet are based on real facts.
