We are discussing Orhan Pamuk's novel The Museum of Innocence.
Imagine walking into a room where hundreds of ordinary objects are carefully arranged on the shelves — earrings, cups, old tickets, some figurines, even incense burners. Where do you think you are? In a museum? But when you're told it's someone's life, love, frozen in time?
In May, we will discuss the novel "The Museum of Innocence" — a story that touches many people painfully from the inside.
"Is this a book about love or obsession?" — this is a frequent question among readers. Everyone has their own answer, of course.
At the meeting, we talk not so much about the plot, but what lies behind it. Can Kemal's feelings be called love or is it addiction? Who is Füsun really — an independent person, a victim of circumstances or a reflection of someone else's expectations? Can the narrator be trusted? How do we see Istanbul fifty years ago?
The novel "Museum of Innocence" takes place in Istanbul in the 1970s — a society where strict norms apply, but at the same time there is already an interest in the European lifestyle. Pamuk shows how these rules can subtly break destinies.
This story also has a rare continuation in real life: the Museum of Innocence does indeed exist in Istanbul. Pamuk thought of the novel not only as a text, but also as a space where the objects of the story become "real". As if the story of the novel really happened. But is it so?
During the meeting, we will also talk about how we cling to the past through details, whether we can notice that we are happy, and how much our choices are influenced by the gaze of others.
Come if you want to discuss what you've read and perhaps gain a little new understanding of your own memories that we return to so often, and to hear the opinions of others.
