Opening of the "Toila Summers" exhibition

In the second half of the 19th century, Toila and its surroundings began to develop into an outstanding summer resort, and this was especially rapid after the opening of railway traffic in 1870. The development of Toila as a summer resort strongly influenced the local economic and cultural life. This gave farmers and fishermen the opportunity to sell their produce to summer residents. In winter, however, the marketing of butter, cream, milk and eggs in Narva and St. Petersburg brought income. It was necessary to build new premises for summer vacationers. Cottages were built, rooms were furnished with furniture (according to stories, almost every house had a piano) and other necessities. Summer residents also encouraged the development of cultural life. Singing and trumpet choirs were created, plays were staged and the activities of social organizations developed. On the one hand, this was done for the benefit of the summer residents, on the other hand, the summer residents were directors, actors and advisors.
At the exhibition "Summer vacationers" you can get to know creative people who spent their summers in Toila and created here, there are cheerful photos of summer vacationers and beautiful places in our region that provided refreshment.
The photos of the exhibition were chosen and the texts were prepared by Lea Rand, the old photos were colored by artificial intelligence, the exhibition was designed by Kaisa Pukk and the technical implementation is by the advertising and printing agency Trage.
The photos are from the home history collection of the Toila Library and the Film Archive collection and the MUIS web portal of Estonian museums.
